Pear Coasters

Flourishes-Limelight-Designer1-300x1962

Hello and welcome back to another Sunday in the Limelight with Sharon Harnist! I’ve had so much fun this month, working with Flourishes’ gorgeous stamp images — I’m sad to see it end! Today I’m sharing one of my favorite things to make, a 4” x 4” tumbled tile drink coaster, and Flourishes’ beautiful new Pears stamp set worked perfectly for it!

FL-PearCoaster-SH

These tiles are simple to make, using your permanent Copic markers! I began by prepping the unglazed tumbled marble tile with an alcohol prep wipe (or you could use Copic Colorless Blender Solution), to remove any dust or residue — they are normally quite dusty straight from the home improvement store.

Next, I stamped the pears with Jet Black StazOn and the sentiment with Timber Brown StazOn onto the tile:

I usually heat set the StazOn with my heat embossing tool for about 3-4 minutes. Be careful and keep the tile on a heat resistant surface and don’t touch it until it is cool! Or you can bake it in about a 250F degree oven for approximately 15-20 minutes . . . or wait overnight, to be sure the StazOn is good and dry (I’m not that patient!).

Then I carefully colored the image with these Copic markers (colors and collections are listed below):

Yes, normally you should NOT use StazOn with Copic markers, but somehow it soaks into the tile pretty well (along with the heat setting) and if you are careful to not touch the stamped lines with your marker tip too much, you shouldn’t have any problems! (Just be sure to wipe the tip of your marker off, if it becomes discolored with the StazOn). But I like using the StazOn for the image, because it’s permanent and won’t budge!

I don’t do anything else to my tiles when using them for drink coasters — I like to have the natural, unglazed tile remain absorbent, so they’ll soak up the sweat from a glass or canned drink. The color will remain nice and vivid for a long time, even when it gets wet because the natural tile will just soak up the water! But some people like to apply a spray sealant or fixative to their tiles, to help protect them — it’s your choice!

Many thanks, once again, to Flourishes for having me in the Limelight this month — I’ve SO enjoyed it! And thank you all for visiting and leaving your wonderful comments!

Stamps & Scraps ~ Faux Tile!

Happy 2012 everyone! It’s that time again… it’s time for “Stamps & Scraps“. I’m Ally and today we’ll be talking about making a faux tile embellishment using your stamps and scraps.

Let’s begin…

First off, I cut a series of different sized circles out of Flourishes Classic White Cardstock. Then I grabbed two stamps; the daisy heart from the Hearts and Flowers stamp collection and the heart flourish from the Fanciful Flourishes set.

Using two tones of blue ink, I stamped each circle with a pattern.

Before gluing my circles down, I inked their edges. Then I adhered them down within the outline of a heart I cut out using my Klic N’Kut die cutting machine. I backed it with a Fancy Pants filter paper shape.

Here’s my fully “tiled” heart. Next I took a bit of antique ink and distressed the tops of my circles to tone down the white a bit. I carefully applied some Ranger Crackle Accents liquid to only the areas between my circles.

Here’s the layout I attached my faux tiled heart to:

2012

supplies:
stamps, cardstock, Flourishes; cream & black cardstock, Bazzill; patterned paper, Crate Paper, BasicGrey, Jillibean Soup; inks, Memento, Ranger; edge punch, Fiskars; pins, Maya Road, Making Memories, Little Yellow Bicycle; flowers, Prima; gems, KaiserCraft; brads, BasicGrey; tape, Smash, Ranger; phrase stickers, Cosmo Cricket; die cutting machine, lock and key, Tim Holtz; ribbon, Offray; other, thread, twine.
Here’s a final close up of the tiled heart. Can you see the crackle medium between the circles? Cool!!

For my journaling tag, I designed and cut out a tag using Flourishes Classic Ivory Cardstock. Then I applied some details using the Fanciful Flourishes stamp set.

I hope you too have an amazing 2012! I hope you too will try the technique. So grab those stamps and some scraps and getting creating!

Happy 2012!

Winter Bouquet Bookmark

Hello and welcome to another Sunday in the Limelight with Sharon Harnist! Today I have a fun bookmark idea to share with you:

It is made with a paint chip color sample! It is 6-inches long and started out 5-inches wide. I was able to cut one in half and still have the other half to use! After cutting it in half, I just rounded the corners, punched a hole in the top, and matted it with black cardstock to make it sturdier. The top is tied with twine.
I used Flourishes beautiful Winter Bouquet stamp set and stamped the smaller image onto an Inchie Arts white Twinchie (2-inch) matboard square with Memento Tuxedo Black ink and then colored it with these Copic markers: BG000, E23, E25, RV63, RV66, RV69, YG61, YG63, YG67, YG93, YG97, YR21, YR24; and Lemon, Melon, Sand Atyou Spica Glitter Pens:
The sentiment from this set is originally meant as a holiday greeting, but I selectively inked the words I wanted and used a stamp positioner to make it into more of a Valentine/Love sentiment — Wishing You Never-Ending Love!
I hope you’ll have fun trying this idea with different color schemes and seasons/hoidays! Thanks for stopping by and I will see you back here next Sunday!
