Meet the Artists

Marcella Spanogle HawleyMARCELLA HAWLEY
“I was born in the spring, and I never got over it.” This quote from garden photographer and writer Ken Druse perfectly sums up my approach to art and life. I am infatuated with flowers, completely taken with the color palette of nature and all of her glorious combinations.

While I am a graphic designer, my heart is in the garden, and I love to illustrate what I find there. Working in watercolor and gouache, pen or pencil, I delight in observing and creating. I’m not a purist or a technical illustrator by any stretch. I like to add a little “somethin’-somethin’” to give each drawing my own unique stamp. And speaking of stamps, I have learned so much from the talented stampers and cardmakers of the world through my work for Flourishes! I am consistently awed by what I see in blogs, galleries, and sometimes in my own mailbox. It is an honor to design for such a fabulous company, and for such a wonderful audience: the papercrafting community!

Previous to starting my graphic design business, Marcella Hawley Creative, I was art director of Mary Engelbreit’s Home Companion for nearly 10 years, working with creative, inspiring people every single day. I also was assistant to the art director at Martha Stewart Living magazine. My illustrations have appeared in a number of gardening magazines.

I live in St. Louis, in a happy jumble of rare and wonderful plants, sketchbooks jammed with ideas, and my biggest inspirations: my two children, Lulu and Finn.

I’m Lauren Pope, an artist who grew up beneath the big sky of Tulsa, Oklahoma. In my early years, I had no outside prodding to pursue art, much less any formal instruction. My desire to create was an innate response to the evocative power of the drawn image—the grace of line, the depth of shadow, the dynamics of narrative in composition. As a child, I could often be found sitting before open comic books, sketchpad in lap, pencil in hand, diligently honing skills that would eventually mature into the tools of an artist. The sketch books of my high school years testify to my eagerness to not only emulate the work of others but also to experiment with various stylistic interpretations of my own.

Since college and graduate school, I went on to work as a professional illustrator for A Beka Book. After leaving that company, I worked as a freelance artist illustrating children’s books, school textbooks, fashion and identity designs. I also have loved to paint commissioned portraits and fine art. My work has been featured in venues such as the Pensacola Museum of Art in Florida, the Greenhouse Gallery in San Antonio, Texas, and the Roundhouse Gallery in Fort Collins, Colorado. My artistic flame can be ignited simply by walking through a garden, a trip to the farmer’s market or a chance encounter with a captivating human face.

Right now I live in Tulsa, Oklahoma, with my husband and three children.

My name is Becky Fleck and I live in the beautiful Stillwater Valley of Columbus, Montana. I am an illustrator and graphic designer by trade and have been drawing in some form or another since I was a kid. I love the creative process and am particularly fond of stippling with Rapidograph pens.

I own and operate, a free community resource of sketches for scrapbookers and cardmakers. In February 2008, I released a new book from Memory Makers called Scrapbook PageMaps, featuring 60 never-before-seen sketches in five popular sizes. The book also comes with a really cool card deck that detaches from the book. Each card has a sketch on one side, and a finished layout on the other. The card deck is super handy to take to crops, classes and shopping.

When I’m not designing or scrapbooking, I also enjoy fly fishing, camping, and watching football. I am a diehard Minnesota Vikings fan and cheer on my alma, the ASU Sun Devils. My husband and I live on an old cattle ranch on the Yellowstone River with our retrievers, Jackson, Harper and Libby.
