Flourishes Focus… in a tin!

Hi all and welcome to the Flourishes Focus for this Friday — where we take things that are supposed to be used for other things and make them pretty with stamping! That was the challenge that yours truly (Julie) issued – to make an altered item. Because Flourishes sells these great tins HERE — I knew I wanted to create something fun using them. Did you see they are only 50 cents a piece? That’s a fun little bargain! :-)

Being that strawberries are my favorite summer fruit and being that THIS is one of my favorite fruity sets from Flourishes, I knew I wanted to alter my tin to be a holder for some fun little strawberry candies. I’ve seen where folks have altered the actual tin — but I wanted to create almost a card around my tin. So, the wheels started to spin!

I picked up my Labels 7 Nestabilities die, a circle die and a big scalloped circle die and — that ‘s what started my altered candy “book!” You can see above that I already had colored up my berries on a piece of Flourishes Classic White. As for Copics, I used the Poppy, Fields, and Daffodil Collections grouped by Flourishes HERE along with the pastel color B0000 for shading. Add some stickles and.. done with that part!

From there, I decided that a 5″ by 3″ piece of Basic Grey Paper (from Green at Heart) would serve as my spine. I scored the paper so that I had a 1″ spine. See?

Then, using a mix of Basic GreyGrey (June Bug) and 7Gypsies (Victorian), I created my “book”…

And, this is how the cover turned out! I added a little tag with a sentiment from the Strawberries set and THESE mini silver tags. Add some twine, and of course, a little bling!

Some have asked, do you have a punch that matches the inside of the tag? Actually, all you need is an embossing tool — and you’ll soon have a template for your sentiment on your tag.  Sorry for the blurry pic below! But, you can see that using the tag as your guide, you can rub the tip of the embossing tool around the inside to create this indentation. This will show you the size of the tag. Just add your sentiment and trim! IMG_2847_edited-1

Now, I also wanted to deck out my box for my candies — but I wanted it to be a little more low key. So, I stamped my berries directly on my decorative paper top, coloring with the same Copics I used for the outside image and adding a bit of white thanks to an Inkssentials gel pen.

And, here’s a peek at the inside. I used more of my Basic Grey paper to line the inside. I added a strip with another sentiment and a cut out berrie and… voila!

To secure my box to the inside of the “book”, I had to use some of this super duper tacky wonder tape…..

And this, my friends, is it! I didn’t get a great picture of it — but I did use THIS crocheted lace trim along the top of my box. It is the perfect size!

And, here’s a peek at how the box fits into the inside of my altered book!IMG_2856_2

After a quick trip to the candy store…. this is a peek inside! Gotta love those cute little strawberry candies!

I have to say, while researching altered tins and trying to brainstorm ideas, I found some hysterical ideas for these little tins! Did you know you can create a guitar out of one? Yep! Just click HERE.  And, THIS is a great idea! Pour wax on the inside for a fun little candle! I even saw someone make a battery charger out of one of these for their iPod! Seriously! I should point out that I did put together a little show and tell on a calling card holder I did last year using these little tins — just click HERE to see that!

Well, the Flourishes DT has been firing up those creative juices with their own types of altered projects. So, be sure to pay them a visit!
